PCE Ltd is delighted that the HMP Five Wells project for the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) with main contractor Kier is a finalist in the “Community Engagement Project of The year” & “Project of The Year (Over £50m)” categories of the Construction News Awards 2022.

PCE was appointed as superstructure and façade delivery partner for the Secure Accommodation and Entrance Building for the new resettlement prison at Wellingborough, a £253m contract awarded to Kier by the MOJ as part of its wider Change, Strategy and Planning Directorate within Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service.

Smart integration and connectivity are at the heart of PCE’s HybriDfMA strategy, which will be key to guaranteeing speed, quality, building performance and safe construction benefits whilst reducing follow on trades, deliveries into site, carbon footprint and the overall delivery programme.

Safety

Despite the challenges caused by COVID-19 during 2020, the construction of the new prison by Kier and supported by PCE continued safely by utilising the benefits of Modern Methods of Construction.

Quality

In total, the project incorporated 15,183 precast elements with over 50,000 sub-components offsite manufactured in multiple locations around the UK and the Republic of Ireland all went through PCE and Kier’s stringent quality regimes before being delivered to the site.

Speed

PCE structurally completed 9 buildings and 1,680 prison cells built in just 45 weeks. The project represented one of the largest Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) strategies within the UK construction industry at the time.

Value

BIM and digital integration with the MOJ, Kier and the supply chain were paramount for PCE with all components tracked digitally throughout the design, manufacture to installation.
