Durham University update 5 – architectural archways take shape

Offsite engineered architectural archway units

The PCE HybriDfMA structural solution for the Mount Oswald Student Accommodation project at Durham University with main contractor Interserve Construction includes two pedestrian access covered archways on two of the buildings.

Two sets of columns at either end of each archway support a load bearing architectural precast concrete panel between levels 1 and 2 with the lower portion showing a concrete arch with an Ashlar finish and brickwork above, weighing 2.23 tonnes per arch spanning 3.31 metres long and 2.28 metres in height. Elevation of PCE's design model compared to finished assembly. The columns have also been cast in concrete with an Ashlar finish to compliment the ground to first floor architectural precast sandwich panel construction for the building’s envelope at this level. The columns and sandwich panels are supported on precast concrete ground beams which have been constructed by PCE as part of their design and build package which maximises their Offsite construction approach.

Durham University is working with partners Interserve Construction, Campus Living Villages and Equitix to deliver the project.
