PCE has achieved a major milestone with the installation of the first cross-laminated timber (CLT) flooring units at Brent Cross Plot 1. This marks the company's debut use of CLT flooring, integrated with precast concrete and recycled steel to create a pioneering hybrid structural solution.
The project is a testament to PCE’s expertise in hybrid construction. The CLT flooring connects between three different products, requiring diligent detailing to ensure seamless integration between precast beams, composite steel beams, and post-fix steel angles.
CLT, manufactured with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) precision, is significantly lighter than steel or concrete but offers robust load-bearing capabilities. Its natural, warm aesthetic and exposed soffits contribute to the building’s design, while its environmental benefits are substantial. Responsibly sourced from Stora Enso's Austrian facility, CLT not only provides acoustic, thermal, and fire performance but also stores carbon, making it an excellent choice for long-term sustainability.
The engineered timber components arrive ready for immediate installation, without any further work required. Throughout offsite manufacture, components are coated with SIGA Wetguard protection, a rainproof and robust full-surface self-adhesive membrane for reliable moisture protection of timber elements during transportation and assembly. For extra quality control, components were tested on-site using moisture content probing, with additional SIGA sheeting and neoprene used for protection and longevity.
Collaboration between PCE and Eurban during installation of the first units enabled efficient assembly, with the use of repeatable processes setting the scene for enhanced productivity. Getting the detail right from the outset is key to an assured, efficient, and high-quality strucutral solution.
Jonas Roethlisberger, Project Designer at Eurban, spoke about the first day of CLT installation:
“It was an exciting day for both PCE and for Eurban! The PCE team were great, everyone who was involved was very interested and wanted to learn new things. They managed the installation of the timber very well and took on board any guidance given. I was impressed by PCE’s organisation, and their attitude to health, safety, and communication was excellent. I’m sure they will enjoy a lot of success with the timber components that will soon arrive to Brent Cross Plot 1.”
PCE has collaborated with Curtins on the design of Plot 1, seamlessly complementing the architectural vision of ShedKM and the structural engineering expertise of Heyne Tillett Steel. The Hybrid Frame DfMA build system is being employed to bring added value and certainty across the design, manufacture, and installation of this unique structure.
Incorporating CLT into this project reflects PCE's commitment to innovation, blending structural materials to optimise both functionality and sustainability in modern construction.
