Capella update 13 – final precast concrete columns installed

External glazed panels to follow next

The last precast column has been erected on site at Capella, Cambridge, with the project still running on time. The facility is being constructed by PCE Ltd to provide world class scientific and research facilities and features the integration of an extremely complex services strategy.

This includes the pre-installation of the main services routes and package plant along with the integration of a precast façade solution with pre-installed glazing.

 

The eternal glazing panels will arrive on site next and be installed at a rate of 300m² per day. The Capella Laboratory in Cambridge is in the process of being constructed in conjunction with consulting engineers Arup and main contractor the Kier Group.

 

Delta Beam

The structural frame design adopted, in general terms, consist of precast columns with a combination of precast concrete edge beams and structural steel Delta Beam spine beams, supporting 300mm deep hollowcore planks and a 300mm reinforced insitu structural concrete topping.
