Capella update 4 - offsite construction demonstrates what can be achieved in a week

Photos prove the speed benefits of offsite precast components

The latest images from the Capella Laboratory, Cambridge show how much has been achieved on the site of what will be a world class scientific and research facility - in just a week!

The Capella project has a stringent requirement to minimize vibrational effects when it is occupied and in use - due to the very sensitive scientific equipment that will be installed. PCE Ltd are delivering the 7 suspended floors of the structure totalling approximately 17,000m², including the suspended ground floor to Level 6, as well as erecting the 5.0m deep basement walls and external envelope, in just 8 months of site activity.

Simon Harold, Business Development Director:

“PCE’s detailed approach to developing smarter hybrid structural solutions, as with Capella, continues to win the company significant new business with the Kier Group.” ???????

Fast construction programme

The fast erection programmed is much shorter than other suitable structural frame solutions would have allowed. A considerably reduced onsite workforce is needed - as well as a reduction of lorry deliveries typical of offsite construction. The potential of disruption to other users of the Addenbrookes site is being greatly reduced as a result.
