HybriDfMA Bespoke System project is EU Mies Award winner!

Kingston University Town House announced as winner of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture

PCE Ltd is delighted that the 2021 RIBA Stirling Award winner, the Kingston University Town House designed by Grafton Architects, has now also won the prestigious 2022 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies Van der Rohe Award, often known as the EU Mies Award.

The EU Mies Award is awarded to single architectural works demonstrating excellence in conceptual, social, cultural and technical terms. It raises awareness of quality architecture and its contribution to the well-being of citizens and the sustainable development of European cities, towns and villages. The Award is made on a biennial basis and for the 2022 Award 531 projects were submitted for consideration. Further details can be found at EUMiesAward.

The Mies jury said Kingston Townhouse "accommodates dance, library and study spaces using layers of silence and layers of sound which work perfectly well together. ‘The building creates an emotional experience from within and through the multi-level façade colonnade that creates a domestic atmosphere on different levels."

The jury added: "This is the first time that a university building wins the architecture prize, and it shows that there is a need for public educational projects with the quality of this one, which dignifies people’s lives through education and being together and gives the same educational possibilities to everybody."

Grafton founder Shelley McNamara said: "Kingston University, London bought into our vision for Town House and they were true partners with us on this prestigious project. We designed the six-storey Town House to act as the university's 'front door'. ‘We wanted to create a space which was inviting and welcoming to the local community and which fostered collaboration within its walls. This award is a wonderful reflection on our client, the entire Grafton Architects team and design team." Simon Harold, PCE’s Business Development Director said:

"We are very pleased for Grafton Architects and Kingston University in winning this prestigious award and that our contribution to providing a high quality offsite design and build solution with our HybriDfMA Bespoke System helped to enable the architectural aspirations to be achieved. PCE’s selection & appointment of the product supply chain as well as our control and expertise in ensuring that all manufacturers exceeded specification requirements was crucial in the overall project delivery."
