177 brick faced precast concrete façade panels installed at Golden Jubilee National Hospital

The aesthetics of traditional masonry and stone with the advantages of offsite engineering and construction

PCE Ltd has used their HybriDfMA precast concrete façade system approach for the NHS Golden Jubilee surgical centre in Clydebank, Glasgow working with Kier Construction Scotland.

The three-storey structure that was architecturally designed by IBI Group with civil and structural engineering by Curtins Consulting will provide an expansion of elective surgical capacity, specifically Orthopaedic Surgery and Endoscopy procedures. The building sits on the north-east corner of the existing hospital complex and will be connected to the existing structure by three new link bridges. The building structure is a  reinforced precast concrete frame and the envelope is a robust framework of precast concrete façade panels with anthracite grey matt powder coated aluminium windows and louvre panels. The precast façade panels were manufactured offsite with glazing and vent panels preinstalled at the factory to minimise working at height.

177 offsite engineered façade panels

As part of PCE’s HybriDfMA Frame Systems solution, the 177 unitised precast concrete façade panels are primarily clad using Himley Ebony Black Wirecut Dragfaced Facing Brick to the ground floor and Sandalwood Wirecut Dragfaced Facing Brick to the upper levels, both with complementing coloured reconstructed stone bandings and mullions. Certain façade panels also feature an aesthetic splayed brick detail leading to the window reveals. The precast façade panel sizes were also maximised in line with the lifting capacities of the tower cranes, minimising the number of external joints to be sealed.

The anticipated installation programme for the façade panels was nine weeks, using one of the project's four-man highly trained and multi-disciplinary installation teams, whilst the second continued with the installation of the precast concrete structure above, alternating between tower cranes as the build progressed, receiving deliveries on a planned and precise just-in-time basis. A challenge for the site team will be the turning of the second and third floor façade panels being delivered on edge due to transport delivery height restrictions.
