The complexity of the construction sector has “the power to shape our economy, society and environment”, according to Net Zero needs concrete thinking, a recent report on the Property Week website.

The article by John Handscomb, founding partner at Akerlof, is a response to the PW/UKGBC Climate Crisis Perceptions Survey 2021: Results. “There is a small but sizeable window in which to prove ourselves responsible contributors to a green recovery” stated Mr Handscomb, who revealed that brave risk assessment is the key. “This is illustrated by the design, specification and procurement stage of development, when decisions are made concerning whole-life carbon and the circular potential of our buildings.”

Opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint

Akerlof is working in partnership with PCE, Accelar, Curtins and precast product manufacturer Forterra Bison as part of an Innovate UK funded consortium to map the embodied carbon within the existing Ministry of Justice secure accommodation designs and to identify opportunities to reduce their actual carbon footprint in the future.

In a recent release, Simon Harold, PCE’s Business Development Director is quoted as saying:

“By looking in the round at one important aspect of delivering today’s buildings, we are confident we’ll find a relatively simple, cost-effective and eminently scalable way to reduce carbon emissions, benefitting our clients’ communities as well as contributing to the UK’s efforts to hit its net zero carbon target.”
