Vulcan Mill update 3 – construction of basement and under-croft parking complete

Residential development project update

PCE has successfully completed construction of the basement, under-croft parking and amenity areas for a 101-apartment residential development at Vulcan Mill in central Manchester for main contractor Russells Construction.

This part of the structure has been constructed using precast concrete columns to support 700mm deep steel Deltabeams, 260mm pre-stressed concrete Hollowcore units, and other precast concrete units. Steel reinforcement and insitu concrete was used with the Deltabeams to provide a composite concrete/steel support for the Hollowcore units, giving the suspended floor soffit a clear span without any down stands.

HybriDfMA structural solution

The result of PCE’s offsite-engineered, HybriDfma structural solution approach has enabled follow on trades to commence work on the levels below in line with the construction programme and agreed methodology. The new building will sit adjacent to the original Vulcan Mill, a former Victorian machine works, which was refurbished in 2007 to create 120 apartments.
