PCE's HybriDfma solution for Durham University underway

Design and procurement of the offsite manufactured components has started

Interserve Construction Ltd has appointed PCE Ltd to provide structural solutions on a design and build basis using an offsite manufactured crosswall construction and architectural cladding approach for a significant number of the bedrooms which will have ensuite facilities.

PCE has been awarded a contract worth over £18 million for delivering the structures for five four storey blocks which will comprise of:

  • offsite manufactured precast concrete ground beams
  • internal wall panels
  • flooring units
  • stairs and landings
  • structural steelwork
  • precast insulated architectural finished sandwich panels forming the facades.

The architectural panels will be manufactured with different finishes dependant upon location, including the casting in of bricks, reconstructed stone finishes and patternation created from the mouldage during the casting processes.

4,000 structural components

Design and procurement of the offsite manufactured components are underway with construction on site of the PCE HybriDfma solution which involve the erection of over 4,000 structural components to commence later this year, with an expected on site programme of  approximately 12 months. Durham University gained planning permission earlier this year for their proposals to develop the Mount Oswald site in Durham City for student accommodation as it drives forward its University Strategy 2017-2027 plan. By 2027 Durham University is expecting 50% of its expected 21,500 students to live in collegiate accommodation and the 1,000 bed spaces that the Mount Oswald development will provide is a significant part of this.

Durham University are working with partners Interserve, Campus Living Villages and Equitix to deliver the project.
