Chapel Wharf update 8 – 2,900 offsite precast units in 34 weeks

How offsite manufacture keeps onsite construction moving

The on site construction of Chapel Wharf, a residential project in Salford, Manchester for developer Dandara, is making considerable and rapid progress.

PCE Ltd has been engaged as the specialist design and build contractor for the four tower blocks, which will be up to twenty three storeys tall. They were appointed by main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine. PCE is currently working on level twelve of Block A which will be seventeen storeys high and level nine of Block B which will reach fifteen when complete.

Benefits of the offsite engineered approach

The design and build offsite engineered solution adopted by PCE includes the external architectural precast concrete cladding panels, which feature glazing which has been pre-installed at the production factory, enabling the fit out of the residential units to follow on closely behind the construction. The fit out is being carried out three levels below the recently finished construction level of Block A and two levels below the finished construction level of Block B.

After 34 weeks on site, PCE has erected over 2,900 units - just over 30% of the total number of offsite components that will be required for the overall project, with an average of 32 deliveries a day being delivered and erected by four tower cranes.
