Why a hybrid design and construction approach was essential for BHR project
Successful project enabled by effective DMC, BIM and 3D modelling
More details are now emerging regarding the recent award of "Highly commended" to PCE Ltd's recent BHR project for the West London Mental Health NHS Trust.
During the Concrete Society Awards, television personality and event compare Bill Turnbull introduced the Broadmoor Hospital Redevelopment (BHR) in Berkshire by explaining why the project has been successful.
"Meeting the client’s architectural aspirations and end-use needs, this high security hospital demanded a hybrid design and construction solution.
"The three new ward buildings, entrance and administration buildings were built using over 6,150 precast concrete components from 8 factories, combined with in-situ reinforced concrete" he continued. "The successful outcome relied on offsite manufacture to an exacting specification. Using the Design for Manufacture and Construction concept, BIM and 3D modelling, ensuring tight tolerances, high quality finishes and crucially rapid construction."

The award judges conferred the award by confirming that the project had been recognised:"For design, logistics and finish; a masterpiece of Design For Manufacture and Construction methodology."
