Royal Holloway update 2 – the advantages of Hybrid Construction in a confined space

Carbon footprint for construction is minimised

PCE Ltd is now beginning to erect the steel frame elements of the Hybrid Structure that will become the home of the Royal Holloway University of London Department of Electronic Engineering.

The images show the initial erection of the steel frame that will become an auditorium area for the students. Design of the structure by PCE commenced at the start of 2017 with the start of manufacturing of the offsite components in March and onsite erection commencing at the end of April.

Confined site space

The building is being constructed with a 55 tonne capacity crawler crane.

Because of the tight site access around the building, the deliveries of components on a ‘just in time basis’ is critical. 

PCE’s design approach and planning processes results in fewer lorry deliveries to site and the relatively small number of well trained and experienced PCE operatives ensure that the overall carbon footprint for the construction is greatly reduced.

The main contract was awarded to OsborneStride Treglown are the client’s Architect and Arup the Engineer with Colin Smith being the PQS.
