About the Project

1,950 individual ensuite rooms for UWE

  • Location: Bristol, UK
  • Client: University of the West of England
  • Main Contractor: Carillion

Construction of precast accommodation blocks in just 40 weeks for the University of the West of England.

The new facilities are housed in 24 blocks arranged in four courtyards – 19 at seven storeys and five at six storeys.

Key benefits to the client

  • Offsite manufacture saving time and labour
  • Services and features built-in at manufacture
  • PCE’s expertise in hybrid precast design
  • Supply chain management and on-time delivery

The contract was completed two weeks ahead of schedule. During the build programme, PCE had more than 80 personnel working in six crews to ensure the contract kept to schedule.

Precast and prestressed floors

An unusual aspect of the design was the use of precast and prestressed solid floor units which were wider than traditional hollowcore, reducing build time and had a surface finish which did not require screeding and a soffit suitable for direct decoration – eliminating the need for follow-on wet trades.
