CEF Durham update – advanced precast hybrid project underway

Offsite manufactured components delivered “just in time”

Construction of electrical wholesaler CEF‘s new data, IT and marketing centre in Durham, UK has begun. The PCE Ltd Hybrid structural solution will meet the demands of the design brief developed by Newcastle based FaulknerBrowns Architects to develop a “technologically cutting edge building”.

FaulknerBrowns, according to their website, “have a reputation for using our expertise and experience to question traditional typologies, challenging what a particular building might look like, how it might be used, and the ways it can impact society.”

CEF is the UK’s largest electrical wholesaler / supplier with almost 400 branches across the country and is focussed on developing innovation within its sector.

“From the beginning of the project they have encouraged us to develop a contemporary workplace solution which embodies and reflects their drive and commitment for innovation.”

Steve McIntyre, partner of FaulknerBrowns.

Precast concrete beams

Over 290 precast concrete and steel beam components, manufactured offsite, will be delivered to the CEF project on a just in time basis in order to ensure the efficient construction of the structure, thus meeting the contractual programme requirement of 11 weeks.

Thermally-Active Building System

Main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine won the tender to bring the design to life and it is not surprising that they chose PCE Ltd to provide an innovative Hybrid solution that not only meets the buildings structural requirements but also incorporates a combined cooling and heating system within the precast units, creating a Thermally-Active Building System, (TABS).
