PCE makes 2016 Excellence in Concrete Awards shortlist

Flagship VW project showcases offsite concrete construction techniques

The Concrete Society has announced the shortlist for its 2016 Excellence in Concrete Awards, the longest-running awards event in the UK construction industry. PCE Ltd's mixed use precast project in Brentford has been shortlisted for the award.

The new flagship Volkswagen sales and service centre in London (depicted above) is a 15,468m² structure. It is a suspended four-storey facility with a service centre at ground floor, showroom at first and second floors, offices, as well as 7300m² of car parking over four suspended levels. The project was constructed within an 18 week on-site programme, giving a 14 week saving over an in-situ concrete solution. The use of 3D modelling during the design process assisted in ensuring that the potential clash of structure with M&E services was avoided, as well as helping to determine the accuracy of connections and developing logistics and erection programmes.

2016 Excellence in Concrete Awards

Now in its 48th year, this prestigious awards initiative showcases the use of concrete as a structural material. The final winners from this impressive list will be announced at the Awards ceremony, being held on Thursday 17 November 2016 at The Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London. Kathy Calverley, managing director of The Concrete Society, said, “The judges have been overwhelmed by the exceptionally high number of outstanding projects for this year’s Concrete Society Awards.  They have been equally amazed at the high quality of each project and have had a tremendously difficult task choosing the final shortlist.” “With such an impressive shortlist, The Awards ceremony and dinner will prove to be an exciting event.  Once more, this popular occasion will be a platform to showcase to industry that concrete is a material worthy of celebration.”
