Paradise update 10 – a totally hybrid construction project

2 storey hybrid structural frame at city centre location

Construction works carries on apace in the heart of the City of Birmingham as the Paradise project really begins to take shape.

The PCE Ltd’s hybrid structure (photographed) shows the ongoing construction of a suspended car park level below a podium level that will form the ground floor of two new office buildings, Number 1 and Number 2, Chamberlain Square.

The upper level deck structure will also provide the surrounding public realm areas around the buildings linking into the existing landscaping of Chamberlain Square and forming a link between the Square and Broad Street.

The benefits of hybrid construction

Apart from enabling a faster erection programme, precast units by PCE – manufactured to tight tolerances – improve the overall quality of a project with improved accuracy of fit. PCE’s in-house company systems enable full control of a project from design initiation through to on-site handover.

PCE have recently completed hybrid construction projects in Stafford Town Centre, Cambridge and an award-winning development for Volkswagen in Brentford.

Referring to the Birmingham based undertaking, Nickie Brown, Managing Director of PCE said,

“The Paradise Project presents a clear evidence of the considerable quality and related benefits provided by innovative and proven hybrid construction techniques. Indeed, the entire project is totally hybrid.”

One of the biggest outside London

Rob Groves, senior project director with Argent, who is leading the project, was quoted on the Birmingham Post website as saying

“This development is one of the biggest of its type outside of central London, with commercial office space, to have happened in a decade.

“It’s going to be a few minutes away from New Street, it will potentially have a Metro stop outside its front door and is right in the heart of the city.”
